Witches are a very classic "horror story villain." They are not always evil, but most of the time come across as powerful and creepy. "Aunt Maria" is an interesting combination of creepy and sweet, using a typical sweet old woman trope to disguise the actuality of her character and the truth of the village. Aunt Maria, the character, has to watch and take care of two siblings, Chris and Mig. Chris always challenges her. At first she seems sweet, like the grandma who would bake you cookies or have tea parties. But after a while, it is discovered that she cast evil spells on the villagers, causing zombie-like trances. Her true self is revealed.

This can be observed as one way the media represents the classic witch characters. Women being in power is something heavily shown here, but it is shown with a bit of a twist as well as Diana turns this on its head. While women in power often seems to cause other characters, mostly men to question what they are doing, like how Chris does to Aunt Maria. Over time one can see she has gained power while masking her evil self. It is just interesting to see how somehow women in power is often still so questioned by others, when it's actually quite amazing, as she really pulled off controlling many villagers just by herself.
