What is weird? It is hard to explain. Everything could be weird, it just depends how you see it. Weird is the antonym of normal， so it could be used as abnormal. For me I feel it is more like the kind of things that you can't really understand at the first sight. It doesn't need to be really scary，weird would also be funny. There are different ways of weird, but most of the time it is scary. Because of that human beings would naturally feel unsafe about things that they are not familiar with, things that are abnormal, things that are weird.
The movie The Cabin in the Woods is the kind of movie that you never know what is gonna happen in it. It is a weird movie. As all the horror movies get into the same kind of pattern, the weird of this movie becomes apparent in that it is just to unexpected, so different from any other horror movies. This could be because it actually plays on horror movies, using familiar tropes to twist into something weirdly unfamiliar. For example, there are many interesting analogies in this movie that represent something. Specifically, the five main characters are to represent the five stereotypes of characters; while, at the same time, the whole mission that these characters have is to please these ultimate gods that will reign terror if they do not get what they want. In turn, this represents the viewers, the audience as a whole. We want to be pleased, and many will leave angry remarks if they do not get what they want from a movie. The government that is trying to control the characters are the film directors, hoping they get everything right. That's what makes this movie so strange, so weird. It plays so much on tropes, that it actually gives us something fresh and fun.
